Rural Development

The Indian agriculture has dominance of small and marginal farmers. With global share of 2.3% of land, 4.2% of water, and 17 % of population, the per capita availability of land is 4-6 times less than the world average. The pressure on limited resources is further getting intensified with diversion of agriculture land, water and labor towards industrial, urban and non agricultural sectors. Increased food production has to be achieved from the limited or diminishing resources. About 74% farmers in India are small and marginal farmers. Organic agriculture is most relevant to them. In this farming system approach a piece of land is used optimally and to its fullest potential to produce a range of nutritious and healthy food as well as other required commodities in a manner which can healthily feed a small family, and maintain soil health and productivity by agricultural practices based on principles of nature. Pests (both insects and diseases) are also controlled and managed by the selection of crop mixes and using biological control measures.

Since the village is the basic unit for planning and action in any developmental activity, village priorities, hopes and daily needs must come from “within” and not superimposed from out side the village for success to occur. MARDI intends to develop Jaivik Village and Manas Model Jaivik Gram”. This needs whole hearted participation of village farmers. It is only possible once MARDI provide them social, financial and resource infrastructure within the village as per road map mentioned below.

Manas Model Jaivik Gram:

The whole village is ready to convert as “Homa Village” and “Resonance Point” is established for regular performance of “Agnihotra and Trayambcam” by the active participation of villagers. A neat and clean village - “Nirmal Gram” is formed. The village should be self sufficient for its food, fuel, water, electricity needs.

It should be self sufficient to produce hygienic food to eat, clean water to drink and pollution free atmosphere to live. It adopts Jaivik practices in cultivation of crops and other allied activities ( habitat development, rain water harvesting, recycling of organic residues)

It practices Farming Systems (FS) approach which acts as a complement for each other activities.

Proper transport facilities for people and Crop produce to be marketed in near by areas or in distant markets. Market facilities (Haat painth) including facilities for short term storage of produce and its safe marketing is created It should have the basic education facilities. It should have primary health care units.

MARDI Road map for Jaivik Gram:

»
Select a group of farmers intending to adopt organic farming on a minimum of 50-100 hectares of contiguous area in a cluster mode.
»
Convincing to promote Jaivik Krishi in the whole village or for conversion of a contiguous block to ease in Certification by ICS and the third party certification.
»
Try to involve the village community for proper habitat development through tree plantation and creation of water bodies.

Nurture the herd jointly, and take the responsibility of input production and sharing.
»
MARDI intends to procure the organic milk and market it on the behalf of group.
»
Try to arrange at least one cow per 5 acres area, for production of bio enhancers and bio pesticides for their regular use.
»
Provide training and basic infrastructure to enhance the farmer’s skills, for input generation at the farm and provide enough literature which can be understood.
»
If possible, arrange water body for conservation of rain water and its sharing.
»
Arrange regular visits of group members, to established organic farms, to gain the confidence for undertaking organic production activities
»
Help them to prepare a crop plan suitable to the soil and climate, and as per MARDI guidelines

Help them to select local varieties of crop, which are well adopted to the local environment.
»
If possible, encourage groups to produce their own seeds and plants by adopting Jaivik techniques.
